Thief III

well the demo is finally out! I meant to leave it downloading overnight last night but I forgot :( so I'll have to wait to play it. However there's a review here [gamespy.com] which is a little bittersweet. I haven't seen the demo myself apart from screenshots, but the author of the review basically opines that the new Thief is an excellent game considering it's the first Thief game done by Ion Storm, but it doesn't particularly advance the franchise. I've heard many complaints about the graphics - sounds as thought they're pretty much the same as the previous version, although the lighting engine sounds pretty awesome. I'm not that fussed to be honest - if it's nothing more than a new story and a bunch of Thief II levels that I haven't played yet I'd still be ecstatic :)

Geek Chick

Well, R is definitely learning something from this diploma she's doing - 95% in a photshop and digital imaging exam *beams proudly*. Plus she now knows more about wireless LANs than I do hehe. Best of all - the other day we were talking about a slashdot story regarding ... well I can't actually remember what it was about but it was something to do with large scale images etc and converting them to jpeg - and R came out with a line about how they're using a lossy codec and should be storing as something else etc etc - I'm so proud :)

Pandora's box

Well I finally got VMWare running under Suse 9.0. It's taken a lot of messing about, and none of the solutions I found online worked for me at all. Finally I installed vmware 4.01 from rpm, then installed the upgrade patch (vmware-any-any-update60.tar.gz) - it replaced the kernel modules suse had built, and then ran config.pl. I had to let config.pl compile new modules (otherwise it halts execution) but then not overwrite them, and all was wunnerful! So thankfully R has a working VMWare setup on her machine now to get over all the issues with dreamweaver etc not working properly under crossover. I still feel a bit weird about installing windows on it - and it actually made me quite upset when we made it full screen, that was the first time her machine has ever had a windows desktop on it! Bah. at least it's safely contained within a box...
