Gmail
I’ve managed to score a gmail account for both myself and R, thanks to the generous invites of another developer – and it’s wicked! Gmail has a really snazzy interface, and for a change there’s not a load of annoying graphics and ads to wade through before you get to your mail. The system is very responsive, and has some great javascripty features – like a drop down of email addresses as you type in the “To” field, ala Outlook and most popular email clients. Gmail uses a “conversation” system – like threaded emails I guess but the way it’s presented makes it very intuitive, and it’s trivially easy to expand and drill down through the conversations.
The big difference with gmail I think is that they promote the idea of searching your email better than ever before rather than having to file it properly – getting the full power of the google search engine to scan your mail. It’s an interesting idea – I’ll be looking forward to trying it once I have some more actually useful mail in there.
So for anyone who feels like it – shoot me a mail at toby.tremayne@gmail.com
