Well I just got kde 3.3 working on my desktop – quite nice. It was the easiest upgrade I’ve done thus far, having found some instructions on how to get it done with yast2 (which I can now no longer find, as I printed them out and forgot to bookmark the damn thing). It’s a little quicker in some areas, and has a number of fixes and improvements for things like Kontact (which is looking spiffy) kmail, kpilot etc. All is working nicely, and I finally managed to recompile my nvidia drivers for the new kernel (now updated happily to 2.6.5-7.108-default).

I’ve also switched to using the enlightement window manager. It may not last, but at least for the moment I’m enraptured by the eye candy it presents, and it’s a significant speed increase over running the full-blown KDE desktop. I can still run any of my KDE/Gnome apps when I need to, but the rest is nice and lightweight, with some funky transparencies and applets etc :) In a word – shiny.
